(B,D) Thu, May 3rd: Rome/Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano/San Giovanni Rotondo – Morning departure to SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO. As the autostrata turns into the Appenine Mountains, it passes through the one of the most beautiful parks in Europe, the Abruzzo National Park. Keep an eye out for the bears. Our first stop today is at LANCIANO. The city was named for the soldier who struck Jesus with his lance. The most popular of the Eucharistic Miracles occurred here. A monk was having doubts and his doubts were growing stronger. One morning during Mass, at the Consecration, he began to shake and tremble and faced the people to show them what had happened. The Host had turned to Flesh and the wine into Blood! After our visit, we continue to San Giovanni Rotondo to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Grace where we see Padre Pio’s Tomb and cell. (B,D) Fri, May 4th: San Giovanni Rotondo/Bari – “Festival of St. Nicholas” This morning we depart to BARI. Upon arrival we visit the Basilica of St. Nicholas of Bari to see the relics of St. Nicholas. The remains of St. Nicholas were taken from southern Turkey in 1087. They lie in the crypt and are the source of pilgrimage for Catholic and Orthodox Christians. Today the Festival of St. Nicholas begins with the transfer of the relics.
